Silhouettes

In Silhouettes, Marine Fonteyne pays homage to Belgian surrealist René Magritte, whose work challenged the line between reality and illusion. The central piece, Ceci n’est pas un jardin (This is not a garden), features a woman’s silhouette filled with vibrant Chita fabric—a traditional Brazilian textile rich in floral patterns. The title, a nod to Magritte’s iconic phrase “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe), invites viewers to question what they see and what they assume. By blending her Belgian heritage with her Brazilian roots, Fonteyne creates a dialogue between cultures, perception, and identity—where the familiar becomes unfamiliar, and meaning lives just beneath the surface.
