Above and Below the Surface

Following Museum Standards
In Above and Below the Surface, Marine Fonteyne contrasts the ocean’s serenity with its hidden stories of loss. Printed silk panels cascade like waves, showcasing her own photographs of sunsets and sunrises, evoking the ocean’s beauty and the tranquil view above the sea. Beneath them, organic red embroidery directly represents the profound loss of lives among immigrants navigating the perilous crossings of the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. This textile installation is a reflection on the ocean as both sanctuary and reckoning—a reminder of its captivating allure and the tragedy beneath the surface.
